Ejmiatsin
Armenian folk dance T-shirt
Ejmiatsin comes from the dance heritage of Karin (Erzurum) and is one of the “back and forth” round dances. Folk tradition holds that it is very old, and the way the dancers hold their raised hands is likened to a church dome. The illustration is a line drawing of a woman dancing with her hands raised, alongside handwritten lines from the song. Printed on the back.

About the dance
Ejmiatsin (also spelled Etchmiadzin) is a song-dance whose homeland is the city of Karin (Erzurum) and its surroundings. Refugees carried it to Akhaltsikhe, and from there it spread to nearby villages.
Its roots go back to the age of sun worship: as the sun rose, dancers lifted their arms above their shoulders in homage to it. Over the centuries the dance took the name of Holy Ejmiatsin, the Mother Cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The circle closes and opens again like the disc of the sun, and the dancers’ arms trace its rays.
